Dry heaves may indicate that your pet has internal parasites, internal food infection, food allergy, bloat, liver dysfunction, or has swallowed a poisonous substance.
If there is no vomiting and diarrhea, and you are confident that the dog has not eaten anything that could be toxic to it, then we can move beyond quite a few of the above illnesses. It could also indicate that there is a blockage which is causing the dog to heave to try and remove it. Give the dog simple meals of boiled chicken and rice for the next 24 hours to see if his condition improves, if it does not, this could be Bloat.
Bloat, or Dastric Dilation Volvulus, is a potentially life-threatening condition in dogs. The dog's stomach becomes twisted, trapping air and fluid, and progressively gets larger. Left untreated, this can lead to shock and ultimately threat. Since this is not something that can be ruled out online, I would suggest you run your dog to the local vet to get scans done to see if this is the case.
