Milk Fever, also known as eclampsia, is a acute (sudden) onset life threatening disease caused by low calcium levels. It is most common in the first 21 days after whelping and is seen more in small breed dogs. It can occur in the time just before birth as well. Initial signs include restlessness, panting, pacing, and drooling. This progresses to tremoring, stiffness, and weakness. Untreated the next signs are muscle spasms, fever, increased heart rate, seizures, and death.
If you have any concern your dog has milk fever take her to a veterinarian immediately. This is a serious, fatal problem if untreated.
