My horse flip over in a trailer , he is 16.1  and broke his withers he was stall rest for  1 1/2 to 2 weeks( he could not walk and needed to be iced daily )  one vet told me it would take him one year to ride, I 'm a barrel racer , so it is hard riding (I'm guessing due to the lack of her knowledge in this certain case) compared to a vet  that had more experience  , said that it usually takes 6 weeks for bones to heal , not involving  tissue damage ofcourse , but my horse has been out since then and  is pain free (lucky considering it was a very bad accident) and I plan to start riding him in the spring time and work on his trailering again.. I'm guessing laura that it would really depend ,  on the way your horse is built , the fractures and   his or her's mobility , again it only takes 6 weeks to heal bones , but the rest is damaged tissue !  His accident was horific and his nice big wither's are completly vanished and now replaced by an emptiness in between his shoulder's, but he is as active as ever ,,, I would say  everyone's  problem is specific and if you are not sure about it  ,ask around . Best of luck for you and never  give up !!

Of course, she'd been to the vet!!! The accident she had was VERY traumatic. She required 4 weeks of me dragging my children with me 3 times a day to ice, medicate, or hand walk. My vet is extremely vague on how long it will REALLY take to heal, so I was wanting some horsey person that has a horse or has known of one that had this break. It's been 5 months and the fracture in her hind end has healed nicely. She's feeling good except for those withers.

Hi, I know that this was a few years ago, but I wondered how things were going?  My horse fracture his withers in Dec 10 and he is comfortable and turned out in the day now but the bones have not yet started to heal yet (8 weeks later).  I wondered what other peoples experiences are?
My gelding has bone chips above T3 that are causing swelling which is destabilising that area.  So I believe that this is slowing the healing.
My vet is keen to leave alone for another month, but I am wondering the pros and cons of surgically removing the bone chips?
Thanks

As far as I've been told 6-8 months an the horse should be turned out to recover after the first 30-60 days !!! Then re-x-ray to be sure has healed before you put weight on it!!!!!  Build back slowly to your usual routine!!
