When female dogs go into heat it last up to 21 days. Yes they do bleed everytime they go into heat
There are 4 stages in a dog’s oestrus cycle; Proestrus, Oestrus, Dioestrus and Anoestrus. Proestrus lasts about 10 days. This is when the bitch is preparing to mate. Hormonal changes will cause the vulva to swell, there will be bloody discharge, and she will be attractive to male dogs however she will not allow them to mate. Some dogs keep themselves so clean you may not notice any discharge. Proestrus is followed by Oestrus, also known as standing heat because the bitch will accept the male dog. Oestrus lasts approximately 10 days also and the discharge changes from bloody to straw coloured. Following standing heat Dioestrus lasts 60 – 90 days. Discharge will cease. Anoestrus can last 4-5 months.
Vaginal bleeding is important feature and most usual sign of canine heat cycle. Before start of this bleeding, swelling of vulva is seen. When bleeding starts in the dogs, male start to attract but female has no interest in having sex with them because mating at this stage will not result in to pregnancy. This bleeding period can be of maximum ten days. After this period, bleeding tends to stop or reduce and then mating is possible because now both partners are ready and attract each other for this purpose.
