Toads tend to have dry skin. On examination it is drier in comparison to frogs. They also are more warty i.e.: Generally tend to have more warts. Some may say this makes them look uglier than frogs.    Frogs spend more time in water than the toads. Frogs also prefer hopping whereas toads tend to stroll around.  Toads are also supposed to be browner in colour along with their skin having a leathery texture. It helps them retain water better.  Toads are also known to burrow. Though some of these characteristics overlap in certain species of frogs, these signs collectively can help one identify weather one is observing a frog or a toad.
