For one thing (and very important) you visit your vet for her post whelp exam to make sure things went okay and try spot things that didn't (rupture, prolapse, hemorrhage retained placenta, decaying pups, ect.) and prevent infection (may need an injection to help with clean out) that may result in losing her and her pups. They will usually go over things to watch for and some of the more common problems and their danger signs for this part of having pups at that visit. Many don't leave them alone at least initially but can be complicated to say the least if you aren't sure what is and is not supposed to be happening and what to watch for and do.
