American bulldogs are well known for their love of children, I have one he's nearly 2 and I also have 3 grandchildren under 5 years old, he adores them and is always cuddling up to them, the only thing you have to b careful of is their strength, i.e. Knocking a child down not on purpose its just that they are so big lol.  Just never leave your American bulldog on its own with a child as with any other breed.  But they are the most loving dogs I have ever known and they will protect you if it meant their life.  Mine well all he does is lay besides me giving me kisses and boy do I know if any ones about he soon lets me know.  I'm just saying treat any dog with love and that's wot you get back. Hope it helps. Check out American bull dog websites

I have an American bulldog and she is wonderful around my children, I got her a four months old and she takes the tail pulling and the rough play and everything. She has been the most loving dog ever. She has been in our family almost 3 years now, and I don't regret a single moment of it. They are protective if they sense bad vibes from other people, but other than two times of her warning us about someone, she is so loveable and will lick you to death if you let her. Plus she thinks she is a lap dog.

We just got an American Bulldog stray that is about 2 1/2 years old. He is housebroken, great with people and other dogs, and very rarely barks. He is extremely strong and strong willed but my wife has him under control. He is the greatest and my first dog in 58 years, his name is Petey, just like the Little Rascals dog.

To be honest I think it is how you raise them. Everybody has there opinions on breeds but that isn't it. I had a pit bull and a lab mix. Believe it or not my lab was more violent then the pit. He was great with the kids just not other animals. So it really depends. If you buy them as a puppy and train them around children they normally are good.

Hi , by the way happy new year. Any dog is good for children depends how you raise the dog to be. Pit bulls are friendly dogs also people think there bad and dangerous it depends how you train them some people train them to be bad which is not good when you have kids.

I would wait until your kids are older to get ANY dog. They are too excitable, too loud, too quick, and don't know how to properly conduct themselves around dogs...then when they get nipped by the dog its always the pups fault ( In my opinion it is always the humans fault, if you can't stop your dog from nipping then you aren't an effective pack leader therefore don't own a dog...even a min pin). But as for when they get older yes an American Bulldog would be a great family companion granted you are willing to put the time and effort in to properly socialize this stubborn brute of a dog. They are intelligent, happy to please, quick to learn,  strong, gentle, sweet, affectionate, and usually quiet. My 11 month old female Allie weighs over 90 lbs and is the best dog I could have asked for. Just make sure that any puppy you get is raised inside a house with a family that has kids and not outside in a dingy kennel.

The best way to find out is look at the Sire & Dam and see what their temperament is. If you don't know how then bring an expert with you. Any breed that gets to popular starts to get ruined because people see A chance to exploit and make money. A few years ago they were one of the best for temperament, but things change. Be careful and walk away if not sure of the dog.

I have an American Bull Dog and it's the best I have ever had, well all dogs you have are the best but this breed is so smart and learns easy cause all they want to do is please there owner. Don't ever mistreat one cause they can be ruined by the way they present themselves. When correcting one get down on the ground with it so that your not bigger than it is and correct them. They are very Happy Dogs and deserve to be treated like they are family by happy owners cause they do smile when treated good. They are very friendly and I can't go on there's just to much good about them to try to explain.

I got my American bulldog pinky (cus he had huge pink balls) when he was 1 yrs old, 6 months before my first child was born. My eldest is now 3 and I have a second. The minute my eldest was born he showed just how protective he was! I needed to find strength any time somebody went near the pushchair that he didn't like( he is brilliant with people but loves the kids) . My kids love him and he clearly loves them(but never leave a dog alone with kids) he shows great inteligence at times such as coming to me when the kids have been upset at early ages, but are very stupid at times such as not listening this could jusf be strong will.he knows who's boss but pushes his luck.his size can be an issue but children take knocks all the time and cause him more grief than he does. If ever he has growled it's because they have hurt him and he's had enough it has been nothing more(Please don't mistake this as aggression any dog would do the same, they have had worse off me) my only complaint is the dog hair and he slobbers like no other.

I have an american bulldog bitch, shes 5 now,bt she is brilliant with adults children& other animals, weve recently got a kitten, whichs is smaller than her head&hangs off her tail bt she doesnt bat an eyelid, shes fantastic, the best temperment dog ive ever had..the only thing I would say with 2 yr olds is that thay are quite big&can be quite clumsy,& a 2 yr old would be easily knocked ova,she also has a very powerful tail, whichs always wagging bt does hurt yr legs when it wacks them let alone if it hit a small child in the had..my bulldog would not intentionally hurt anything bt when my fantastic comes round I keep the dog in the kitchen just incase she accidently hurts him...they are excellent family pets bt maybe under 2yr olds is too small...I hope this helps

My partner has a two year old child and I have two adult american bulldogs, I am amazed how gentle they are with his little boy, they seem to know he his little and tread gently around him and are very affectionate, tolerant and loving towards him. I couldnt recommend a better breed of dog to be around kids.

I have a 1 year old american bulldog, I've only had her for a couple of weeks and I have a 1 year old son, where she wz poorly treated with her previous owner, I was a bit weary of her at first, but she loves to run around out the back garden with my son and play games, she the most loving dog I've ever had, and she's verry protective of us to because she knows shes being loved for and cared for, so if you bring them up the right way and the whole family shows them attention, she'll never let anything happen to you

I can say that I beive american bull dogs are great pets. My parents got one for my brothers and I when we were 7 and the youngest 2. She was the most loyal and loving dog we have ever had.. Unfortuently we put her to sleep 2 months ago but she gave us 14 years of wounder memories and gave us the gift of another dog who is so much like her... We have had other breeds of dogs but mine and my familys favorite has been the american bull dog... I will never own another breed of dog for this breed is the greatest ever...

American Bulldogs(I prefer English) are territorial, loyal dogs. Although they may be hostile to guests, they are very stable and loving towards family members. Although they are not the smartest hound you'll ever meet, they make awesome guard dogs. I would definitely recommend this breed. If you want something a teensy bit smaller with that same robust look, I would go for a French Bulldog, or a Boston terrier. They're both sweet little dogs with big personalities. Hope I helped. <3

We had an american bulldog bitch, she was the softest big lump ever, she used to actually try & curl up on your knee like she was a lap dog but she just weighed a ton!! Lol She was brillant with children & very loyal. My parents had a yorkshire terrier at the same time & he was a lot  more snappy with the kids. I'd say they are the best breed ever. Just make sure you train it well  from the start. Good luck

It depends on the dog. Each dog has their own personality. Introduce them at an early age to see if they do well around kids. You have to train them at an early age and socialize them to other dogs and children as soon as you can. Supervise the dog when he/she is with your children for a good amount of time so you know that they will be okay. Bulldogs can be feisty since they were breed to fight bulls. They can be great lapdogs and love people. Socialize them early and you can have a loving dog. Try not to spoil it and train it at an early age.

Every dog has a lifelong outlook on it's life...and it depends exactly how this animal is treated & raised! The introduction of two new members to the "pack" is tricky...but with Stafford Terriers/Bulldogs, you have to be willingly to separate the kids from the dogs at all times. Direct contact is advisable to be 100% of the time..supervised!
It's not the best breed to be introduced to two very young children!

It's interesting that you would put bulldogs, and Staffordshire terriers into the same category. They're not the same breed of dog at all.

Yes ma'am, all terriers are prone to bite and bull dogs are in the terrier family. Unless you want a watch dog to help you do your job as a mom better you may want o wait a while before getting a dog. The kids are too young to understand all the things they need to to have dogs around them. Otherwise, if you are dead set on getting a dog and you must be a super mom anyway :), I suggest a large enough dog to be able to protect you and the kids, like a German Shepherd. There are several good breeds besides that though.

No I would not think so because I live next door to 3 of them and I have a baby brother. I wouldn't get one until they are a little older.

There are a lot of dogs I Would Trust and that would not be one! If you are looking for a friend and to protect your child a Curr (like Ole Yellow) WILL protect your child and NO ONE WILL BOTHER your child including YOU!

Which do you love most? Your children, or the idea of having a macho dog? It is that simple.
I would never have a dog in the house that MAY pose a threat to my child more than the average dog might.

It doesn't matter what type of animal it is, dog or cat, ferret, bird, guinea pig or pot bellied pig, you must NEVER leave an animal alone with a small child, even if you have had it since birth. Animals are like people -- they can turn on you or your children without any provocation in just an instant. To have both children and pets in a home you must be very observant, extremely loving to both and I think most importantly, not be afraid to discipline either.
