Lying on their backs shows their vulnerable underparts, I have read that they only do this when they feel happy, safe and secure, so it sounds like you are taking really good care of them and they trust you totally!

Hello I hope your cat is lying on it's back because it is happy and content...that is usually why a cat will lay on it's back...I have two cats one male and one female..they are both neutered and spayed.

Very often my female cat will roll over on her back and show me her belly...in cat language being able to touch their belly is a complete act of trust of their human companions. My cat, her name is Joone Bugs...she loves it when I stroke her belly and tell her she has a pretty belly.

On occasion my male cat will do the same, his name is Benny, he will only let me touch his belly for a short time and that is enough. Then he has to be the big strong male again.

Sometimes cats will lay on their backs to scratch their backs and also to secrete oils from their sebum glands if they are not being petted enough.

Another reason a female cat will roll on her back is if she is in a heat cycle...she will roll around on the floor and expose her belly as if to call a male to mate, she will also be purring and meowing a lot. If this is occuring with your pet, keep it indoors if you do not wish it to have babies.

Good Luck with your cat,

Cats like to lay on their back. They sometimes do it to get your attention. They also do it while they are playing and are in a good mood.

Cats lay in their backs to rest their organs if they are overweight. If your cat lays on their back on a regular basis I recommend putting it on a diet.

Cats like to lay on their back for several reasons. When they are in the sun they like to warm up their bellies. They also do it when they are playing and when they want your attention.

Cats can be inviting you (or another cat) to play by lying on their backs. Sometimes they like to roll around and rub their backs. Some cats even sleep on their backs, sometimes with their legs in the air. I don't think that's too common, but it sure looks cute and funny!

Lying on their back is not a submissive gesture but a gesture to "fight"
or play.  In dogs, lying on their back is a submissive gesture so it confuses
my dog as he things my cat is cowering and my dog gets whopped up on and does not know why.  It is interesting to watch them both.
