There is actually no such thing as a "Garden Snake". That is a corruption of the word "Garter". Most people nowadays don't know that before the invention of elastic, people used colorful striped or plaid straps that fit around their legs to hold up their socks or stockings, and these straps were called garters. When they saw snakes that had similar patterns to the garters people wore, they named the snakes "Garter Snakes".
