Yes absolutely they do swim. I had to check this out because I just moved and I have a huge goldfish pond with shrubs and plants around it. I thought one of the fish might be sick because all the other fish seemed to be attacking it. I just sat there as a snake swan out and grabbed the goldfish and spent 20 minutes pulling it up into the plants.
My first worry was to define the type of snake. It is a garter (I hope) but it is about 2 feet which worried me. Next was can they swim. Yes, they can. I wish I had my cell phone to take a video. Very cool.
Now I have to go and find out if pond goldfish lay eggs and then die or if they give birth to live fish. If it is eggs that would explain the attack by the other fish. All males I would assume.
I just moved from the city to the mountains and this beats the heck out of TV :-)
