Do not wash your filter media in tap water. This kills the "good" bacteria that are apart of a healthy tank's cycle. Take the water out of the tank for the water change and put in a big bucket. Use that water to rinse your filter media with. Your hand will get dirty, but your fish will live.

There might be a lot  of ammonia in your tank, that comes from fish waste and extra uneaten food.when you pour water in the waste floating around will make your water foggy and ammonia can kill fish.  so clean your gravel out and check for diseases, if there is one use melafix.
