There are several different types of snakes in Arizona with black and orange coloring, and at least one of them is poisonous. The Arizona Coral snake is has black, orange, and white bands around its entire body. If that's what you're looking at, you don't want to mess with it.
The Mountain King snake, which is not poisonous, is also black, orange and white. You can tell the difference between the two because the orange coloring of the King snake is between the black bands, and the orange coloring of the coral snake is between the white bands.
There is also a Long-Nose snake that is banded with mostly black and orange and a teeny bit of white trim. It, too, is nonpoisonous.
One piece of advice: Don't go poking any of them with a stick.
