There are a few snakes that could fall into this description.  However, you should always approach a snake with great care as it is sometimes very difficult to identify the poisonous from the non-poisonous.

When identifying you should look at the following:

  • Body type - this can change as the snake puffs itself out.
  • Head shape-does the head look long and narrow or is it flatter more arrow shaped
  • Eyes - Are they medium or small shaped, is there any scales over the eyes and can you see the color.
  • Scales - Do they look keeled
  • Patterns - is there a regular patter or does the pattern look blotchy
  • Tail - does the tail tape to a point, or there any different markings on it.
  • Color - Is the snake a solid colour or does it blend out with blotches.

When you are identifying snakes you will need to make sure that you are in a good location.  Make sure that you have done some research as to what type of snake to expect in that location.  Check to see if you could expect some venomous snakes and if so have an idea of the type of markings that they will have.

In America there are four types of venomous snakes, these are Cottonmouths, Rattlesnakes, Copperheads and Coral snakes.

Venomous snakes can have a rattle on its tail so easily identifiable.  However, some nonvenomous snakes will mimic this and try to rattle its tail.  The difference is that they actually lack the rattle.
