Beavers generally feed on bark and twigs of the trees, which is their main reason for choosing a place that is close to woodland to facilitate their process of getting food.  Later on they cut down the trunks of trees to build their homes, which are referred to as lodges.
Most of the beavers are settled in colonies.  It is very rare that a beaver remains isolated.  The colonies usually consist of two sets of parents with their young ones.  This way, the two families have a very good opportunity for dam building and cutting trees with their combined labor force.  If due to some unexpected circumstances the dam breaks, then the beavers instantly get to work to mend the dam and reconstruct their home.

The young ones of beavers are termed as kittens or kits, who live with their parents for about two years before they themselves turn into mature adults and go on to seek mates of their own.
