Why Do Some Adult Dogs Drool Around Young Puppies?

One reason why an adult dog would drool around young puppies is because they are stressed. Drooling is often a sign of stress and some dogs get it while travelling in the car or when they are worried about anything. Of course, some dogs are natural droolers and these include breeds such as the St Bernard, the Bassett Hound or the Bull Mastiff. So first check whether the dog is a natural drooler.

If the dog is stressed around the new puppy it is best to watch him/her closely when they are around the puppy. They could simply be nervous of the new addition or they just don't know how to handle the situation. It is easy to think that when a dog drools it is because it is hungry. While this may be the case sometimes, it is extremely unlikely that this is the case for them drooling while around young puppies.

Overall, if you are concerned the best person to talk to is the Vet. They will put your mind at ease and you can determine the true cause of the problem.

There are many reasons of drooling in dogs. These can be mouth and dental problems, allergic reactions, digestive problems etc. These are pathological conditions which may lead to drooling.
Some breeds have more drooling which is normal because they have loose lips. Dogs also drool when they see foods.
Stress is another reason of drooling. This stress can be due to another dog or puppy in the house.
Excitement or happiness can also cause drooling in dogs. It is quite possible that your dog is very happy with the company of new puppy and drooling or she is under stress due to new puppy.

I think they get excited to play and have a new friend. Don't be worried unless he is aggressive.

My dog does the same thing. He is a lab chow mix and he loves cats. Every time my mom gets a new cat he will sit in one place, wag his tail with excitement, and drool. Eventually he makes friends with the cats and his drooling ends. He sleeps with 3 cats every night in his dog house on my mom's farm.

Drooling in dogs while sniffing a new puppy can be normal because of excitement. All conditions of excitement can cause drooling in dogs like during play, new friend etc. A stimuli to foods can also cause drooling in dogs.

Only sudden and excessive drooling in dogs can be due to medical cause and should be investigated by the vets. These medical causes can be
  1. Metabolic diseases
  2. Gum diseases
  3. Dental diseases
  4. Mouth diseases
  5. Tongue injury
  6. Mouth ulcers
  7. Mouth tumors
  8. Stomach disorders
So, you dog is drooling due to excitement which is not a pathology and no need to worry.

In wolves and other wild dog species, adults will regurgitate food for young pups prior to full weaning.  I have to wonder if the drooling or excess salivation is a reflex response, as diluting stomach contents would lessen trauma to the esophagus from digestive enzymes. (On a similar note, excessive salivation often occurs in nauseated humans prior to vomiting.)I have to wonder if this is why young dogs/puppies seem particularly interested in eating poop: Perhaps it helps to colonize their gut with the digestive microbes they would get from regurgitated puppy food.
