My Daughter Found A Hairy Black And Orange Caterpillar And She Wants To Keep It Until It Turns Into A Butterfly But We Want To Make Sure We Take Good Care Of It And It Is May And There Is No Leaves On The Trees Yet We Don't Know What To Feed It Please Can You Help?
Caterpillars have a fairly basic diet as you may well expect. They mainly feed off the leaves they crawl around on. They also eat grass and something called a host plant. Unsurprisingly, there is not much choice when it comes to drinking amongst the weeds and foliage. They mainly drink rain water. They drink the moisture from the leaves and grass as they go about their daily business.
Many children want to keep caterpillars as little pets and this is fine as long as they have enough to feed on and drink. It is fairly simple to catch a caterpillar, as they are rather sluggish as they move around. If they are to be kept as a little pet, ideally it should be kept in a large tub in the garden. Put plenty of twigs, leaves and grass in the tub to keep the caterpillar stimulated and also they will feed off the leaves and grass. You may need to include a little water dish if the tub is enclosed as they won't be able to drink rainwater this way.
Caterpillars can come in a variety of colors and sizes so you could have yourself quite a stunning collection in a very short amount of time.
I am doing an experiment on Catipillars growth and I believe Jennifer is right. They do have different preferences but you need to figure out what they like.Just pick 1 leaf per bush or tree you pick(about 10 different kinds should be perfect).just remember that once you figure out its kind it eats, only feed it a few leaves. As Catipillars don't eat a lo.Also make sure you spray some water on their leaves ounce a day.(No more than 1 or 2 sprays) hope this info helped.
The best way to know what type of larval food(leaves) your caterpillar eats is to first identify the type of caterpillar. I would suggest you buy or take out from the library a field guide to butterflies and moths specific to the area of the country you live in. Many caterpillars can look similar- even from different species. Ultimately, you don't want to feed your little friend if it turns out to be something very destructive- such as tent worms. I have been studying and raising butterflies for about 15 years and I am always learning something new. One of the best ways to learn about butterflies and moths is to get out in nature and study them- pay attention to size, colour, and markings of caterpillars, and exactly what sort of plant you find them eating. Many times just knowing what the plant the larva is eating will make it easy to find out what sort of critter you are dealing with. Loads of this stuff can be looked up online. You can also call a local university etymology(the study of insects) department and sometimes you can get help and answers from them. Good luck!
Depending on the species, it eats certain leaves and/or other plants. I found an Eastern Tent Caterpillar, and he loves crab-apple (I think that's what they are) leaves. Do NOT give them water! Caterpillars will drown in water!
It depends on which caterpillar you have, and where it came from, because where it came from, the leaves it needs are probably there. You should probably put a drop of water in their cage for them to drink.
Well, they like to eat fruits like Cherry's and apple and well I'm 10 years old and I have 21 tent caterpillars I have had them for 2 weeks and there still alive and just to tell you THEY don't DRINK FROM STRAIGHT WATER THEY DRINK THE WATER FROM THE LEAVES!!!!!so you welcome.
It depends what type of caterpillar you have got. Different caterpillars eat different kind of leaves and some caterpillars eat certain material that is why they get their names with respect to what they eat like Spruce Budworm, cabbage loopers etc.So for your caterpillar bring in different types of leaves and sprat water on them. Caterpillar will have water from the leaves.
It depends on what kind of caterpillar you have found. Most of them eat leaves some eat grass and some eat each other. It is kind of sounds grouse but its just nature. And of course they drink water and noting else.
Hi... I'm 11 years old and I know you asked this a long time ago but its fall time and this is when the woollybear caterpillars come out for sunlight to catch warm air... You will usually find them crossing the road because sunlight is attracted to the street so you"ll find them there sometimes. Well...woolybears they can eat any type of grass, leave but there favorite plant is clover! I have woollybear caterpillars right now and they are tearing up the clover... Wolly bears are not poisenous but ,They will curl up an play dead to protect themselves! The woolly bear turns into a Isabella moth which is beautiful.... Thankyou... It takes a while till they turn into a moth... But its fun..... FACT: If you have more then one caterpillar and you don't feed them enough they will eat each other... So remember to feed them
Well, from my experience with caterpillars, any caterpillar will eat milkweed (leaves of sunflowers). Any caterpillar will drink water. Don't give it too much though,if you do,it will die. Hope this helped!
Yes they eat they eat leaves, they are always on my pepper leaves so you could get him that or cucumber or tomato and they drink water like any normal thing.
You can feed caterpillars grass and leaves. They prefer leaves from palm trees. Most caterpillars get their water from the leaves they eat, but a fast way to quench their thirst is by cutting a sponge about one inch by one inch large. Stick it under the sink until it is soaking wet. DON'T forget to squeeze the sponge until it is just damp. Then, stick it in the corner of the cage. DO NOT forget to squeeze it, if you do forget then the caterpillars can and will drown.
Tent Caterpillars like to eat apples and maple leaves. Usually they eat leaves from their home trees. But they can "spin" webs that can help them escape an enclosure, just like a ladder. Keep a lid on the cage, but make sure there are plenty of holes, none big enough for escape reasons.
A majority of caterpillars are herbivores and only eat leaves. It depends on what species they are. Some caterpillars only eat one type of leave for their whole lives. My advice would be to give it leaves to eat from the tree which you found it on. There are some caterpillars that eat many types of leaves, so it depends. A minority of caterpillars are carnivores. However, some might eat insects or even other caterpillars to survive.
Well, when you first get a caterpillar be sure to give it maple syrup. This keeps them feeling like they're drinking on something. Then put a leaf or grass in there and that will be its food. Then find some ants that it can chew not. Not FIRE ANTS though. And last, but certainly not least, give the caterpillar a mate to have sex with. Uhh huh
Its just like what Jennifer said but they eat leaves and some types of fruit and they get their water from most food they eat so you don't need to go make its tank look like a pool so just put some leaves or fruit that has a water type thing to it okay
HI I might be 10 but I also found the same caterpiller ,The leaves don't have to be off of trees. You can use leaevs off of bushes too .Hear are some leaves they like Pear tree leaves, soy bean leaves ,and grass.I hope this was helpfull.
Its me again and now I have 30 because I found 9 more on my tree in my front yard and there all still alive and just to tell you make sure you clean there CAGE at least 3 times a week!!!!!!
They like maple leaves, NO BANANAS it kills them!! I have 16, some of mine like apples, and some cherrys, just make sure to clean their cage almost every day, and give them fresh leaves, if you want to you can spray some water on the leaves for the caterpillars they like it :)
Look at the other plants near where you found the caterpillar, if you see where something has been munching on them, this might do as food. Its always best to take some of the leaves from where the caterpillar was found. This is probably its desired food.
What kind of trees do they like? I know, from experience, that they don't like Laurel leaves, or Lilac leaves... Do they like aspens? My 4-year old found 4 tent caterpillars, and we're trying to keep them alive.
I have a caterpillar and it has a white stripe down its back and like yellow or orange hair and I know that they drink water but I don't know what kind of leaves it eats.
Cheers a lot of help I will do that because I have a really tiny one that is yellow and it hasn't eaten and just sits at the top, unlike one I had before
I found a caterpillar outside and its march there is no leaves or grass so what should I do. Also he is black and orange with white dots what should I do ....
Well I have a caterpillar that is bright green and has very small black dots on it`s side. Can someone please tell me the name of it and what it eats and drinks. Thanks=)
Caterpillars eat all kinds of different things. It just depends on the species of them. The species can eat grass, fruit, leaves, insects and other caterpillars
It is my belief, after research, that they eat leaves of trees, particularly the fruits, such as cherry or apple. They also tend to eat the fruits, and maple leaves. They do not, however, eat grass. I am studying and breeding tent-worms to try and find a reason that they get such a bad rap. They are not the only thing that destroys plant, but we don't kill the fungi that does!!!!! If you are asking this to find a way to harm of kill them, please don't.
If you want to make a cage for them just get a 10-20 gallon tank and set a lot of tree limbs in the cage. Then you will need lots of leafs, 4 food feed them apples cherry's and leafs. You might want to add some coconut bark substrate plus bark of a tree ! THIS SHOULD HeLP You you out!@!#@$%$# yo welcome
I don't know what my caterpillar eats so I say this its hairy and has a white line down its back and has orange on its side and a white line on its side with some spots caterpillar so don't say it is please reply I can't have my little ones starve
You people are confusing me but I am trying every thing you people are saying right now I have a fish tank with leaves that are fuzzy as a base for them to walk on and for them to eat I have cherrys and maple leaves. And I only have two of them.
I have 4 tent caterpillars, and they seem to eat cherries and maple leaves. You should clean their cage frequently, and they DON'T eat grass. If you're keeping them for a long time, give them sticks to climb on.
I have a caterpillar that has black fur with some orange stripes in his skin...Does anybody have any idea what kind he is? Just want to make sure he is not poisonous my little girl would like to keep him as a pet...
I have a caterpillar that has a black head, gray sides, and a white line down the middle of it's back. I know that it drinks water and it eats parsley. Could someone tell me what else?
BAN NAS they love bannas I have 30 tent cattipilars ive been doing research on them for 3 years they also love mapple leaves if you don't have the items you will probably kill them but you could try other kinds of leaves
The other day I was walking down a side walk when I noticed what seemed to be a bee. I carefully picked it up when I noted it was a hairy caterpillar. It's head was black then a strip of gold then black again. I brought it home and asked the same question you did "What do hairy yellow and black caterpillars eat?" So I went on the internet checked it out but go no results. I have a raspberry bush in my backyard so I ripped a leaf off and gave it the the caterpillar. He ate it! So there you have it hairy black and yellow caterpillars eat raspberry leaves. They don't drink any think because they get all the liquid they need from the leaves they eat.
I have a common grass yellow caterpillar and I don't know will it eat different kinds of soft leaves like chili leaves or not and does it drink through the moister of the leaves, if it does, I can't as I plucked it from the plant itself.please reply if anyone knows the answer.
I have a caterpillar called Demi who is the same as your description and I feed her dandy lions one a day. She loves them very much. Why don't you give some to yours.
Http://www.amentsoc.org/insects/caresheets/caterpillars.html Try this website as there are lots of different types of caterpillars and they all need different foods. I had a quick read of what it says and if you can remember what plant you collected it from you should try to go back there and get some of that plant and identify it if possible. Hope this helps.
No they don't, they eat bush and tree leaves, you can gather some from near the area where you found him and see if he will eat that. If he doesn't eat that, then you should look for some other leaves. Hope this helps, good luck.
