My dog was treated for gum disease and had the tartar removed jan 09, and has since been on 2 lots of antibiotics because of red gums, smelly breath but no tartar build up. I am taking her again this week to the vets because the same has happened red gums , smelly breath no tarter build up. I wonder sometimes because she does not drink much water if that is the cause.
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the tissues of the gums. Most usual cause of gingivitis in dogs is plaque. This plaque results due to bacteria in the mouth. After few days, this plaque can turn in to tartar which is deposited at gum line.
You can not treat gingivitis in your dog because it is done by ultrasonic scaling. This is a procedure that can be done by the vets. At home, you can brush his teeth daily. Special toothpastes are available at pet stores for this purpose. Dental care diets can also be helpful.
