It might be because during the day there might not be a lot of light so it feels like sleeping. And in the night there is no light at all so it sleeps.
My hamster has puffy cheeks, has been in his wheel for hours, he will run and run then stop and lay down in the wheel for about a minute. Then he starts up again.
Same here, the male dwarf hamster is always sleeping , but the female is up every 4-7hrs
