Aileeny...You are incorrect dear. I did not believe that they could mate either. However I live in Pa. While gardening I stumbled across something I thought was a mix of both. I seen it for several weeks and then layed a trap. When I caught it I took it to the vet and they ran a DNA test. After a few hundred dollars and a lot of time on the phone with the lab they confirmed....it was! I was shocked. We named him squnny and he lives in my back yard. Next time your in Pa email me and you can come meet Squnny yourself! I welcome ney-sayers FYI The only down side I was told is that Squnny will never be able to produce offspring. (not sure why) Its probly for the best. Squnny is a very odd animal.
We named it a squirbet--But Myself and a friend swore it looked like the mix of the 2. It ran down a tree like a squirell, hopped and legs like a rabbit---and a tail like a rabbit--the front looked like a squirrel!!!
Very good question because I have seen several such animals running around our Long Island neighborhood. Sure looks like a cross between a squirrel and a rabbit to me!
Beasty love says he/she has seen humans mate with horses plenty of times , well he has seen an awful lot of DEPRAVITY then.,which is very strange. // ///To mate= to come together to breed. //// Neither rabbits and squirrels nor man and horse can breed./// For a man or a woman to sexually abuse a horse ( which is what Beastylove can only have witnessed and NOT any real mating) is a depravity and is discusting and needs reporting to the relevant authorities as abuse of animals. Which it is. How come he/she has seen it plenty of times!!!
The other poster who says he/she has seen scrabbits around and that they are the offspring of rabbits and squirrels is also mistaken. Rabbits and Squirrels are two different and distinct species. Rabbits are Lagomorphs and Squirrels are of the Rodent family. So the answer to your question in a definate NO they CANNOT MATE

This is the "Squabbit" in our neighborhood. This is the proof that they can.
No of course they cannot. They are two separate species. It is a silly question. You may as well have asked can a human mate with a horse or whatever!!!
