Is discharge after pyometra surgery normal?

Following this surgery there is always a risk of infection and discharge from your dog - and you should also look for redness, swelling and pain. Take her to vet to diagnose what could be causing this discharge.

Pyometra surgery is the best course of action to cure a serious infection in the uterus. This surgery can last for 45-60 minutes, whilst the stay following surgery can be between 2-6 days. Stitches are removed after 10-14 days.

Although post-surgical complications are generally low with this operation, here are some of the more common problems:

  • Bleeding.
  • Infection after surgery.
  • Side effects of anesthesia.
  • Peritonitis.
  • Breaking of wounds at the site of incision.
