The life span of a hamster is about 1.5 years.  They can develop tumors as they age.  Also abscesses and cysts can form.  It would be best to have this hamster examined by your veterinarian who will do an aspirate of the mass. This will help identify the mass and direct treatment.

Just to clear something up to anyone perusing these questions, a hamster can live a lot longer than 1.5 years. Don't fret! It all depends on the breed of hamster. For example, teddy bear hamsters typically live 2-3 years, while dwarf hamsters usually don't live any longer than 2 years. My teddy bear hamster is 2 years and 5 months old and is still very healthy and active.

Hi I have got a hamster which is nearly a year old for the past six months my hamster has had a lump which the vets have said its probably just a fatty lump and that it wont grow anymore but it has now grown to twice the size it used to be. She is still eating and drinking and gets plenty of exercise in her cage as she has got a big cage to play in and she will also play outside her cage and on the living room floor running about. I don't know what to do can anyone please help,

My male hamster has a lump on his back too.
I took him to the vet, and the vet said its just a cyst with liquid inside of it, I took him 3 times and have been given penicillin twice.
If your hamster's lump is hard it could be a tumor, if it is soft, it is probably just a cyst. Go and see your local vet and see what he/she says.
Hope I could help. X

My hamster has a huge purple/black lump on his chest and the vet said it was possibly a blood clot and that it is just a sign that the hamster has lived a long life and it is soon time to go. :(
