This sounds like some sort of infection to me. The yellowish substance you are talking about is dead cells: Could be dead tissue from your cat, or dead bacteria cells that are being fought off by your cats body.
Washing the area out and then keeping it dry early on may have prevented the wound becoming like this, but now that your cat has an infection it would be a good idea to see a vet as antibiotics may be needed.
