Interesting question considering I just stumbled across this while surfing the web.  It just so happens that I have a pit/German shepherd/chow mix.  Her mama was a full blood pit and daddy was a German shepherd/chow.  She is the most gentle dog I have ever seen.  I trust her fully with my children and she plays with our cat who will chase the dog hoping that the dog will turn around to chase him.  She has never shown any aggressive tendencies toward anybody, although she does go on alert when strange dogs come near her territory.  In public places or on walks where she isn't on her turf, there are no signs of aggressiveness.

Thanks to her behavior and gentleness, I decided to adopt a full breed pitbull puppy.  So far, she has been wonderful with the pup and will be an excellent role model for the pup.

Bottom line is this, it really doesn't matter what kind of reputation a breed has, as long as the dog has proper training and given lots of love, it will be a good dog.
