Most are hand fed with a special hand feeding formula for birds or a species specific one. It is advisable that someone with experience hand feeds a bird as it is VERY easy to mess up and kill the bird. So common that most people do not guarantee a baby if it's being hand fed by someone else (you would have to do a necropsy which definitively showed there was a physical defect with the bird or an illness the bird was sold with). It's best to let the breeder feed and take the bird once weened onto pellets.
