If it were me, I would check shelters and Craigslist. There's really no way to see which genetic side the dog will favor when looking at a young pup. There are lots of these dogs in shelters simply because they were adopted by families as house pets, and favoring the border collie genetics,  they turned out to be a nightmare due to the very characteristics that you are looking for( strong herding instinct and nuclear powered work ethic ).  You should easily be able to find a partially grown pup that has been given up so you can judge for yourself if it has the characteristics you desire. At least this way it won't be a crap shoot.

I have one of exact dogs you are looking for. I got her from a gal in Fort Worth Texas who found her on the street. She was living in a loft apartment - absolutely would have driven her insane with no room. That was the perfect recipe for somebody giving up a border mix pup, and it happens ALL the time

I have a Black Lab Border Collie mix dog who is 5 yrs old. I live in a suburban neighborhood in Ohio. She is awesome with my children 5 and 6 and Black Lab / Rot mix. The problem is that she attacks other dogs close to the home when she is walked, and we unfortunately have to find her a new home. If she is at the vet or when I take her to get groomed where other dogs are entering, existing, or waiting she has no problem at all. It is only when she is walked close to home. She listens to my command of "walk" and comes directly to my side, but If other person is walking her the risk that she will "break away" to attack other dogs being walked are too great. Contact me if you are interested. If you are in a rural area she would be perfect for you.

I have an 11 month old blue heeler border collie mix. He knows his commands, kennel trained, high energy but LOVES to cuddle! He's extremely intelligent, easy to train as long as he's properly exercised. Otherwise he loses his mind. I live near Kansas City as well. We're totally heart broken to have to give him up. I'll let you know more if you're interested.

A website dedicated mainly to the sale of purbreeds of various breeds rangeing from toy to giant dogs is www.puppyfind.com. They will list history, care, and various other information of the breed you seek. Course it is one avenue to search in.
