I have a deaf pitbull, she has a lot of white on her and has a blue eye. After some research I learned that the gene that causes white fur and blue eyes is also attributed to deafness. Dogs with large amounts of white fur or blue eyes are more likely to be born deaf. This is only related to congenital deafness of course
Many of the different genes that are responsible for white or mostly-white coloration in dogs are linked to a gene that causes the microscopic hair cells inside the cochlea, the part of the inner ear that looks sort of like a snail shell, not to develop. Those tiny hair cells are what transmit sound waves from the ear drum into electrical nerve impulses that can be perceived by the brain. If the brain cannot perceive those impulses, hearing cannot take place. If there are not enough of those hair cells, or they are deformed, they cannot transmit enough nerve impulses to the brain so the brain cannot process the sound.
Not all white pit bulls are deaf! Nor are all white pit bulls going to be deaf/blind. They more prone to it because of the lack of pigment on the inner ear
I also have a deaf white am staff. She only deaf in one ear.Call your vet they will tell you,for no charge. But it has something to do with while in womb.
Iv'e heard it is hereditary in white pit bulls and some other white dogs. I know that white cats are more prone to being deaf also
Are most white pitbulls deaf?
Maybe when he/she was still a puppy in her mothers womb some amniotic fluid may have gone into her ears and disrupted some development that was happening
