All in all about 38,000 species of spiders have been identified up till now; the basis of classification varies from the dwelling of the spider to its size and shape and from its hunting method to its particular features like spinning and mating organs and shape of its fangs. The biggest impediment in knowing the exact number of species is that many of them especially in the tropical countries have not yet been studied and it is difficult to make any predictions regarding their number or characteristics. The number of known spiders is often considered to be so less that many experts declare that only about thirty percent of spiders have been identified to date.

The most common basis for classifying spiders in biological terms is the number of spinnerets that the spider possesses as some kinds possess eight while others are known to have four or six. Another feature is the fangs which are dagger like in some species like tarantulas and funnel web spiders and pincers in species like orb weavers and red back spiders. While most spiders are harmless to humans some like the black widow are venomous, and as such an insect repellent might help when you venture in dusty and hidden places.
