Sadly, hamsters only live for an average of 2-3 years. This of course depends on many factors, such as breed, lifestyle, illness and possible injury. The small breeds of hamster, such as the Russian Dwarf are only expected to live between one and two years, whereas the larger hamsters such as Golden hamsters are expected to live around two to three years. Of course, this can differ quite a lot, and if cared for correctly, hamsters can live up to five years.
Hamsters are timid creatures and should be kept in an area away from loud/ frequent noise to allow them to sleep during the day and ensure their cage is away from draughts and direct sunlight. A wire care is the best for hamsters as it allows air to circulate and gives them something to climb on (small hamsters may be best kept in plastic cages in case they squeeze through the gaps). In terms of floor coverings, pine shavings are advisable as they are absorbent but comfy for the hamsters, plus then can bury in them easily. For bedding, used specially designed hamster fluff as this is non toxic and won't get stuck if they put it in their pouches. Ensure they have access to clean fresh water at all times, and ensure the water bottle doesn't touch the bedding as this can make your hamster sick.
Hamsters should be given a small supply of dry hamster food each day (it will most likely take this to a store in its pouches). In addition to this, hamsters enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables and so should be provided with a small quantity each week. Any fresh food which hasn't been eaten should be removed the following day to prevent it from decaying.
If a hamster is well looked after they can live for up to 5 years, I have a hamster who is approaching her 5th year this year. A syrian named speedy. When I got her from the pet shop she was in a single cage and looked happy but it was apparent when I got her home that a single cage was not enough for her needs as she was chewing the bars with boredom permantly. This causes brain damage, so I brought her a rotastak with 6 compartments and she was settled and happy as larry. I also get her out every night for 2 hrs in her running ball.. Fresh food and water every day and I clean the cage out every 2 weeks of sawdust and every week with bedding. She is so tame where she is used to being handled I also brought loads of wood gnaws and salt gnaws etc .. I knew nothing about hamsters when I got her but they kind of indicate to you what they want. Admittedly she has chewed thru her house and her running wheel and shes cost me a bloody fortune but god shes worth it. Excercise,,cleanliness,,treats and a large cage along with plenty of loving is the key, and I believe she will will outlive 5yrs old as shes so happy :-)
I had 6 Hamster 2 counting the mother and the father so that's 8 Hamster but my cousin had the mother. The father hamster was starting to eat the baby hamsters when the baby turned 2year old. The baby hamsters died around for 2 year but the father only got to live for 3 years. The mother hamster got to live for 4 half years. If you give a good diet for the hamsters they will live for a very long time, but if you live them junk foods they may get really fat and not live for a long time. It kind of depend on how you feed your hamsters and take care of them. I hope the info that I give you helps. From 16year old Gloria
3 years or more it depends on how well you take care of it keep the cage clean every week change water bottle twice a week wipe it down with baby wipes.
Evidences proved that hamsters usually have a short life spam of abut 18 to 24 months. They have small life of about 2 years, but in some special cases it differs. Older individuals have different results, with hamsters different health problems are associated, you can get their complete details from you consultant, so just try to save yourself from those health problems, if you have a hamster at your place.
An average pet hamster has a lifespan of 2-3 years while they do live longer in the wild. They mature sexually from anywhere between 3 weeks to 3 months (depending on breed) and will produce litters several times a year if allowed to mate.
You can keep your hamster healthy for longer by feeding it nutritious things like fruit and vegetables, grains and providing it with entertainment and a clean environment to live in. Do not give it foods with high sugar content, as this can cause diabetes, or by giving it other items humans normally eat. Tomato leaves and rhubarb are poisonous for them, and lettuce will not give them that much energy.

Hamsters , hamsters, hamsters, I can't get enough of them there so cute and playful, but the only problem is when they die!they can live up too... I don't think your going to be live me,4-9 years. It's true I had a hamsters that lived for about 7 years and she's still a live!
I have just been to check on my hamster and I think he is dying because normally I blow him and he will just get up but he is not moving he is only slightly twitching what should I do ???
Teddy Bear hamsters live for about 2 yrs. I have one and she has a bit of an attitude! I bought her 3 months ago from PETCO. She chewed half the box by time we drove the 5 min drive home. And she love to chew on her bars, I don't know why! I've given her every type of chew toy there is for hamsters, even a Gatorade lid. She would still rather chew on the bars, but over time she has chilled on it a bit. When she gets mad at me she'll try biting, but other than she will gently put her teeth on my finger and lightly pull towards her, like she's testing to see if I'm food. Lol Also, I kinda trained her, if I click my tongue a few times she comes to me to get a treat and she's learned her name...for the most part. But it all takes a lot of time and patients.
I once had a golden hamster that lived 4 years almost 5 years. Most of our hamsters did not live past 3 years. I think it was because there were other breeds (teddy bear, and dwarf) It is my belief that dwarf hamsters have a shorter life span while teddy bear and golden hamsters live longer.
It really depends on how old you got your hamster for. Say you got your hamster on the 2 june then on the 2 june would be his (her) birthday!! Anyway if you got a dwarf hamster then I would say that it would live up to 1 to 3 years or if your lucky more!! But for a Syrian hamster it is less. For a Syrian hamster it is 1 to 2 years!!!! But as I said before if you are lucky more!!!!
I have a Dwarf hamster, and I got him like a year ago! And he is still alive! And all you need to do is just feed en the same food that you bought him, If you changed it The hamster can get really wierd some time and if so they wont eat and die!
It also dependa on what you feed your hamster. If you feed it unhealthy things like chips, cookies and popcron they wont live for and if you change there diet a lot like give them seeds for a month and than give them grasshoppers the next month they will die. But if you give the stuff that are right for there diet diet and don't chang up there diet then they might live longer.
Salam, I have a white hamster she has 1 years and half her name is lola but sh's really so ill, my babay is now with the doctor in the hospital am really afraid to lose her because I love her I hope she lives more than 1 year and half.

It depends on what kind of hamster you have Syrian, or Dwarf. The research that I have done, the ranges are from 1.5 years to 5 years. One book gave the lowest and another gave the highest, that's just approx. You can go to www.hamsterific.com and do some research there as well. Plus we also help you with any other questions you may have.
I have a teddy bear hamster and this is his third year. I am taking him to the vet today he is NOT doing good. Well I am thinking around 3-4 years for bigger hamsters
Took my hamster to the vets today. He said they live from 18 month to 3 years. But can live to 4 years or maybe 5. He said the bigger hamsters tend to live longer than the smaller hamsters. Syrians usually live longer than dwarf hamsters.
I have no idea, but from all of the responses avg 3 years. That is what I take from everyone. Just wanted to write a note to say it has been pretty amusing reading everyone's answers.
The generic lifespan of your typical hamster with an average owner and no diseases, 1-3 years. Now if your an owner who cleans the cage more often and takes your hamster to the vet for checkups, it can possibly live up to 5 years.
I sort of depends...witch hamster you talking about? If its rather big, its a Syrian with lives 3-4 yrs while darf's only about 1-2 yrs! Hope this helps!
I had black-eyed cream syrian hamster, dark golden syrian hamster, longhaired red-eyed cream syrian , cinnamon satin syrian hamster, the black campbell's russian hamster , cinnamon campbell's russian hamster, chinese hamster and a dwarf russian hamster and they all lived up to 12 years , :)
Syrian's (teddybear hamster) usually live about three years. The smaller varieties, like the Siberian and Campbell's, not quite as long, usually around two years. The Roborovski is the dwarf hamster exception, and has been raised to three years in captivity.
Hey guest you asked if Your hampster will eat apple or yougurt Not sure about Yogurt But he Can eat Fruits and Vegtable But only Dark greens and apples and banana's I think
My hamster is a female and she was given to me a month a go and I don't know much about them, but her rectum is swollen and I am not sure what to do or if she is just in heat?
Hamsters are small, hairy, tailless little cretures, originally from the Middle East andsoutheastern Europe. The most common hamster is the Syrian hamster which is usually a golden colour, although it can be cream or white in colour. Most hamsters decend from just three littermates which were domesticated in the 1930's. The life-span of this little furry friend is around two to three years. By this time, your hamster is the equivilent to 80 human years. As hamsters age they become sleepier and begin to slow down. It's not uncommon for an old hamster to hibernate a lot when he is in his autumnal years and he will begin to change in colour slightly, as if he is going grey. Hamsters make ideal pets for young children because they love company and can often be persuaded to do cute tricks in return for a small treat. They are also easy to look after and cheap to buy so when one goes up to hammy-heaven, it can soon be replaced - often without the child realising!
