If this injury just happened you can try applying an ice pack for 5 minutes to reduce swelling.  Frozen vegetables make a great ice pack.  If this lump has been present for more than 12 hours you can try a warm compress to reduce local swelling.  Call your veterinarian to discuss anti-inflammatory medication.

The same thing happened to my dog and a large goose egg bump appeared on top of his head. It was very scary for me - truly - it was the size of an egg. I took him to the vet and since it didn't appear to be bothering him - no change in behavior, eating, or bathroom habits/output, the vet prescribed an anti-inflammatory. (The vet did use a syringe to draw a sample from the bump - under a microscope it showed only red blood cells - which was a good thing.)

The vet also said to give warm compresses to dog on bump 2x a day for 15-20 minutes each. (My dog actually loves that!)

1 day later - the bump is about 1/2 the size it was the day before.

Vet bill was less than $70 - so it was worth peace of mind to take the dog in. Better safe than sorry!

Gee, if I'm reading this right this question is 2 years ago, but what better place to start for a newbie and a hugh pet lover. Whenever trama has been brought to any animal, things very important to watch for is first keep an eye on the gums of the dog,the nose, is the wet, and without your coaching just watch and observe behavior, compresses actually should go cold for 20 minutes wait 20 then a warm compress for about 2-3 hours. Meanwhile I can't stress enough for you to be an observer without coaching the animal to do anything he/she doesn't do in a norm then you can pin point if your in trouble. My biggest advice to you is to start looking for a real vet, one you can establish a relationship with and will help you in your time of need. Another idea when you find that vet send $5 bucks a month for a savings account then that vet knows your good for it also always offer to exchange duties. Maybe something there you can do clean kennels, or even something at their home down to weeding a garden, put that foot forward and you won't have to go through the hell of worring because remember when your stressed or worried your animal knows this and they want to tend to you, which could end up hurting themselves first. Anyway I hope the latter helps you and spread that information!! Hanginon42 like to be friends just started this. E-mail [email protected]

My puppy had a big goose sized bump on his head.  We have other dogs and assumed he just bumped it.  We got to the vet and she shaved the area.... She then removed the fluid and put him on an inti-inflammatory in addition to the warm compress.  I'm happy to have a piece of mind, but unhappy because my 10 week old puppy now looks like a unicorn
