Sure can, it usually takes place right after their heat. The dog may even lactate if prompted by a squeaky toy, which sometimes the dog "adopts".
Our boxer / lab mix had multiple false pregnancies, adopting toys, tennis balls, even my sons hiking boots. She would care for them as if they really were her pups, carrying them to safe places, like behind furniture. She would curl up around them and try to get them to nurse. When she would nudge the squeaky toy, her milk would come rushing in. This could become a problem, she can actually cause herself discomfort by lactating and not expressing the milk.
The false pregnancies will go away when the dog has been fixed.
