Border collie dogs are well known for sheep herding and many still operate as working dogs on farms today, despite the mechanisation of many farm processes. In the past, farmers and shepherds relied very heavily on dogs for working with animals but their dogs were not always up to the job.
Paintings from the 1700s and 1800s show dogs similar to collies but the first Border collie was bred in 1893 by Adam Telfer, a farmer from Northumbria. He mated two of his dogs with different but complimentary temperaments – one was gentle but not good at herding, the other was a good herding dog but did not have as nice a nature. Their pup, called Old Hemp was born on Sept 15 1893 and is recognised as the first true Border Collie.
He fathered over 200 puppies until his death in 1901 and all modern Border Collies are descended from him.
