I am currently a guinea pig owner who has heard that sound many times. Purring means your guinea pig is happy and enjoying himself... If its while your holding him. If he is in his cage and makes a short purring noise it simply means that some noise (phone, tv, ect.) scared him. But it is all perfectly normal. Having a guinea pig either purr or stretch out while in your arms is a sure sign that they are comfortable and like what you are doing!

Guinea pigs make lots of different sounds which can tell you their general mood. Wheeking can signal they need attention or want some yummy veggies to munch.  Purring loudly and walking back and forth can mean they're being territorial or do not want to be bothered. Little chirps and squeaks and bouncing (popcorning) means they're happy piggies.

I've had a guinea pig for many years and they do make weird noises. Purring usually means they are really happy BUT if it's a long lasting purring then I would suggest you take it to a vet or a pet store and ask them advice along with bringing your pig in to show them. It could be in heat or it could be sick but as far as I remember they would make a noise of being hurt if they were in fact hurt. So I don't think it's anything too serious. But I would definitely bring it somewhere to make sure.

Please write back on here and let us know how you made out because that's an intresting question!  It's hard for us to know for sure because we can't hear it ourselves since they make a lot of noises to begin with.

Wheek - A loud noise, the name of which is onomatopoeic, also known as a Whistle. An expression of general excitement, it may occur in response to the presence of its owner or to feeding. It is sometimes used to find other guinea pigs if they are running. If a guinea pig is lost, it may wheek for assistance.

Bubbling or Purring - This sound is made when the guinea pig is enjoying itself, such as when being petted or held. They may also make this sound when grooming, crawling around to investigate a new place, or when given food.

Rumbling - This sound is normally related to dominance within a group, though it can also come as a response to comfort or contentment. While courting, a male usually purrs deeply, swaying and circling the female in a behavior called "rumblestrutting".

Chutting and Whining - These are sounds made in pursuit situations, by the pursuer and pursuee, respectively.

Chattering - This sound is made by rapidly gnashing the teeth, and is generally a sign of warning. Guinea pigs tend to raise their heads when making this sound.

Squealing or Shrieking - A high-pitched sound of discontent, in response to pain or danger.

Chirping - This less-common sound, likened to bird song, seems to be related to stress, or when a baby guinea pig wants to be fed. Very rarely, the chirping will last for several minutes.

That purring noise you hear is your guinea pig telling you that what ever you are doing whether stroking it, grooming it, giving it food, or just hanging out with it, what ever it is he/she is enjoying it.

Welcome to the world of guinea pigs-weird noises! Purring and vibrating generally indicates the are happy, so nothing to worry about =] you can hear my gp babbling on from my kitchen and she lives about 30ft away! The only noise you would really need to worry about is a high pitched shriek which normally means they are v.scared or in pain, and believe me, you'd know if you heard it!!
