Yorkie can stay in to heat for 2-4 weeks with an average of three weeks. Bleeding is seen during first stage of their heat cycle. This stage starts with the vaginal swelling and bleeding that can last for 7-10 days. Mating does not take place during this stage but occurs during second stage of heat periods when bleeding is reduced or ceased.

How long after the blood has stopped will a Yorkie remain fertile?  I was hoping to mate my female Yorkie.  We put her together with a potential male Yorkie two days after her last drops of blood appeared.  The only problem was that the male Yorkie was  was smaller, actually not so much smaller, as that he had very short legs, and could not reach her adequately.

Then, only three days after that (five days after her last drops of blood) we tried to mate her with a Maltese - perfect size - and he was interested and tried to mount her, but she would have none of it.  Did we miss the window of opportunity where she could become pregnant, and will we need to wait now until her third heat?  Also, she won't be two years old until the end of October 2010 - maybe it is better to wait until her third heat anyway.  Any advice or comments would be appreciated.  Many thanks!!

Yorkies are not 12 pounds, they are not a yorkie if they are over seven pounds. Yorkies and silkies are basically the same but one is larger and one is smaller. Yorkies are smaller, any thing over 7 pounds is considered a silkie. A silkie is an older breed than a yorkie, yorkies were created using silkies in the bred lines.
