Originating from Mexico, the Chihuahua, named after the Chihuahua region in Mexico, is the smallest breed of dog in the world. There are two different varieties of chihuahua: the shorthaired Chihuahua and the longhaired Chihuahua. When these tiny dogs are bred as show dogs, they weigh between 3.3lbs to 6.6lbs, depending on the type of show. However, as household pets they can reach a weight of ten pounds. Most Chihuahuas are between six and eight inches in height. Chihuahuas have a larger-than-life attitude and often 'attach' themselves to just one person, becoming jealous of that persons other human relationships. Chihuahuas prefer the company of their own breed to the company of any other breed of dog. Sometimes referred to as 'Chi', the Chihuahua is energetic and graceful and makes a good pet, especially for the elderly. Although the smallest breed of dog in the world, the chihuahua has the longest life span of any size dog.
