Hiccups occur due to spasm in the diaphragm.Off and on hiccup in dogs is not a matter of great concern. It can be due to eating quickly or minor gastrointestinal problem. Persistent and prolong hiccups can be sign of some serious illness and requires vet visit immediately.

If something is stuck up in throat like food particles, or any foreign material or inflammation of the throat  then chocking sound can be heard from dog. It should be differentiated from hiccups and coughing. It will be better to see a vet for differential diagnosis and accurate treatment.

Have you found any solution to this?  I have a 3 year old soft coated wheaten terrier with exactly the same issue.  It seems to be getting worse, occurring more often.  We have taken him to the vet numerous times, but can't seem to get it under control.  Any advice would be much appreciated!

It is very common with dogs and puppies to have hiccups. Unwanted air causes this problem. At this stage I will advice you to give it high quality food to fulfill all its required nutrients. Your dog is rushing towards grass because grass sometimes acts as an irritant and induces vomiting. Your dog wants to get rid of this hiccup problem that is why it is eating grass this way. Take it to vet soon
