I have a 11 year old dachshund and she had swelling on the right side of her mouth. It went away but came back in a month. I am really worried that she has a infection in her mouth, but its so expensive to take her to the vet!
Any ideas what I can do until I get enough money to take her to the vet?

Sat evening noticed my Pug/Chih mix sneezing allot, she does that occasionally so I didn't pay that much attention to her behavior. Another 30 minutes of this and turned the light on her muzzle area and eyes are swollen she has the face of a pit bull. Her nasal area is dripping or discharging clear fluid, she is very itchy around her muzzle, and coughing. My husband and I looked up the symptom on the  internet and several people said to give her benadryl which we did. This morning the swelling is down but still noticeable in her  jaw area both sides. They are very warm and she is licking allot. The early on symptoms , noticed she didn't eat her dinner like she normally does, trembling and tired and then the episode. We can't afford to take her to emergency vet, trying to hold out until monday morning where we can take her to the vet in town. I have no idea what is going on but I will keep all of you posted on her progress and what I find out. Penny's Mom in DP, CA

Swelling of face in dogs can takes place due to many reasons and finding of cause can be a challenging. Either whole face or one side of the face can be swollen. Following are some common causes of face swelling in dogs.
  1. Insect bite
  2. Side effects of medicines
  3. Infections
  4. Hematoma
  5. Allergy
  6. Cancer
  7. Inflammation of the jaw
Diagnosis requires physical examination and some blood works. Treatment depends upon underlying cause, e.g. Antihistamine for allergy and antibiotics for bacterial infection. If your dog is having facial swelling then take him to vet for diagnosis and treatment.

What kind of treat(bacon strip) were they? I ask because we have a choc lab with a swollen face/ear/side of face...only on one side...my mother gave him some bacon strips and this was the only different thing she has done in his day to day life. Just wondering if there is any connection.

I know you said you ran out, but did the swelling happen anytime after you gave this treat to your dog, and thank you....

The vet is coming at 1:30pm and it's 12:45noon now...I will let you know what she says it is....thanks

What did the vet say, have you gave the treats again to see if that what caused the episode?

My Brussels Griffon all of a sudden started swelling up on the left side of her mouth and neck(maybe lymph nodes). She's eating and acting fine but seems like she has a little trouble swallowing and her right side swelling up also. I gave her some benadryl for dogs so hopefully she clears up. I noticed some big red ants outside and she always plays with them unless I tell her not to. I'm thinking that's what bit her. Is there anything else I can give her for the swelling that I can buy @ petsmart or petco? The vet wants to charge $200 just for taking her in without an appointment. Is it severe?

I don't know where you live, but if you have red ants anywhere where you live, she could have been bitten by one or several of them. Did the vet look over the rest of her body when he checked her out I wonder. I've also thought about maybe a snake bite, or even a spider. Sorry I can't be of more help, good luck though.

My dog is going through a similar thing. treated for a bug bite, swelling went down but then reappreared after a month. It has been going up and down varying on each side of her face for a little over a week now. My husband and I have a theory that her jaw muscles were inflamed when her face was swollen and he had strained them when trying to give her the meds. Trying to see if the effects go away with only me giving her the pills. smaller hands. Keep searching for answers and take your dog to the vet again - my dog baffled ours.
