Each particular species of bird begins to fly at a different time. It should be noted that birds do not 'learn' to fly, as they will naturally start to flap their wings when they develop more feathers, it is more about acting on a natural instinct than learning to fly.
So at what ages do birds start to fly?:
So at what ages do birds start to fly?:
- Some birds will develop feathers earlier than other breeds. Finches will usually get their feathers within two to three weeks. They will then begin to flap their wings about and will probably start to fly around five to six weeks, although this time frame can also vary.
- Canaries also get their feathers quite early, at about two weeks old. They will then start flying after another four to five weeks.
- Birds such as ravens and martins will need a longer time for their feathers to develop. In fact, it can take anywhere up until a month for their feathers to start appearing. This means they will probably not start flying until they are between the ages of two and four months old.
- Larger birds such as parrots will take longer to develop their feathers and will probably not start to fly until they reach around four months old.
