Ultrasound in pregnant dogs can be done on two occasions. Firstly, when dogs show signs of early pregnancy after 3-4 weeks of mating to confirm pregnancy. Secondly, after 50 days of gestation. This ultrasound at late stages of dog pregnancy can tell about possible date of delivery, birth defects if any and possible litter size.
X-rays in pregnant dogs is not recommended at early stages of pregnancy but vets can ask for x-rays in pregnant dogs after 45 days of pregnancy. Some people think that ultrasound during pregnancy of dogs can be harmful for the puppies. It is wrong because ultrasound is good diagnostic tool without any harmful effects on unborn puppies.
