Carapace is a word that describes the hard outer shell or crust found in the bodies of Crustaceans. This word is pronounced as kar-uh-pace. Thus it is a shield which acts as a protective cover for the other soft and vulnerable parts of these animals. The dorsal section of an exoskeleton is known as carapace.

Apart from crustaceans arachnids and turtles and tortoises also have carapace or the outer shield. Some of the animals with carapace are lobsters, horseshoe crabs, armadillos etc. Carapace has the function of shielding inner organs like head, thorax and gills. The carapaces in different animals though have the same function have some minor differences for adapting to the structure and uses of the animal.
