What Do Killer Whales Eat?

Killer whales are one of the most efficient predators in the oceans. They work together, as do some other species, to frighten millions of small fish into a bait ball and then consume them, each taking turns. They also eat penquins, seals,tuna,and other large ocean prey. There is even footage by National Geographic of a killer whale biting a 12 foot shark in two. Depending on which ocean they migrate to each year will dictate what they eat. But the bottom line is, they have no predator enemies in the ocean - they are the top killers - and can eat just about anything they want.

Killer whales are usually found in coastal waters and cooler areas of the ocean. They are known to stay in social units or 'pods.' A pod consists of 5- 30 whales. A killer whale is conspicuous by it dark-black body and white patches under the jaw, over the eyes, on the stomach region and towards the sides. Killer whales are known to have an amazing vision. They also have a heightened sense of sound.

Killer whales are fond of fish, seals, dolphins, penguins and sea-lions. They also love to feed on porpoises and blue whales. Resident pods or whales in pods which restrict themselves to staying in one area only live on fish, while transient pods (the group of whales which travel extensively) are adventurous with their prey, aiming for other marine animals. Killer whales hunt in groups, and all the members of the pod participate in capturing the prey.

Killer whales are predatory, so they eat whatever prey they can find in the area they are located.  This may include:

Fish, squid, penguins, sea turtles, and even sea lions and walruses... They have even been known to eat other killer whales.

Killer whales are actually a species of dolphin so they are not at all a whale in fact. They are also the second smartest animal in the animal kingdom.

Usually they eat seals,dolphins and some very huge fishes.

Penguins, krill, baby polar bears, small fish small seals

Killer whales eat polar bears and if the polar bears all die then the killer whales will miss having that food but of course it could eat other animals.
