You can tell if your gerbil is dying because he/she will start shaking when you put him/her down...He/She will also stop eating and drinking and will go really cold and will be very weak! You might want to take the gerbil to your closest vet but if it's a while away just leave it and put him/her in a comfy space next to his/her playmates, gerbils live to 2-4 years but if they are younger, you might want to talk to the vet because they could have an illness, and they might have spread their disease to your other gerbils if you have them!
It will start to doze more often and not jump around quite so much.It wont be such an inquisitive little beast any more and will just want to relax.you wont be able to teach it new tricks any more because it will be to old and tired to learn.with older gerbils, it is important to be gentle, don't take it out of the cage much because it doesnt need so much exercise any longer. But it still needs to know its loved-make sure to give it plenty of kindly attention. Stroke its head and give it some nice treats.
In my experience first it will stop drinking and eating and wont use the bathroom, it will limp around don't try to make it lie down though. Build it a comfort spot and try to make it drink some water by the next 12 hours it'll be gone. Sometimes it comes completely unexpected but this is how my gerbil died. Gerbils live 2-4 years or 5 if there healthy so if it is young no need to worry. Hope this helped!
First your gerbil would limp and you might see a crust on his eyes he\she might stop eating and drinking and you might have to take her to a vet.this has not happened to me I found it online.
I have a group of 3 gerbils and 1 has ages so much more than the others and I think near death too boo hooo
She is very thin, and feels quite bony but I guarantee she is eating fine.
The others run around the tank and cage and she just hops about and is less interested.
I have sat at my computer a few hours at a time and she is rarely out of the bed box but the others are really going for it around the tank digging and chewing.
General old age grumpy gerbil whos stays in and doesnt like going out. She still uses the
toilet and doesnt poo or wee in the bed so thats a bonus lol
She must just be old before her time.
Gerbils live 3-5 yrs approx.
Mine I think are coming 3 yrs old in august 2010. (or could even be 4 I will have to dig out there certificates)

It is easy. Maybe she or he has crust around its eyes of is shaking and titching. She may be losing patches of hair and seem a lot less interesterd in chew or exersise toys.He or she may be lying in a corner bburried under the bedding trying to sleep Make sure you have a ton of water and food for her. Best of luck to you and your critter!
Currently my gerbil, Jennifer, has two babies living in the cage with her. She is limping and laying in a corner under the bedding. She has only been eating a little bit. I am worried and are going through a very tough thing right now. I love her and no other animal could ever take her place in my heart. (She isn't dead yet.) Well, good luck! :)
My gerbils are not running as fast. They are kinda walking around and have crust on their eyes
If it is not walking or running as fast and if it stop eating
Well its hair will turn grey and its eyes will start bulging out. Some of them become cold and stiff or they will become really lazy.
Well... For starters...Gerbils live up to be...6-9years
