This question is quite a popular one that is set for science projects for kids in school.
The answer to this question is still greatly debated amongst both people in class and people on the Internet. There are people who believe that ants like sugar more, there are those who believe they like cheese more and then there are those who think that they have no preference and that they just like any food. This part does have some truth to it because if you leave any type of food out for a long period of time then ants will probably find there way into your home.
The argument for sugar is that ants are more attracted to sweet substances such as sugar itself in its simple powdered form, candy bars, chocolate and gum. They are apparently attracted by the sweetness, but they prefer powdered sugar because the small particles are very easy for them to carry back to their nest or ant hill.
Other people say that it depends on the type of ant and also the season e.g. Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter because they will need to stock up on certain types of food if the cold months are coming.
Others believe that why ants could be equally attracted to both sugar and cheese, the more likely one would be the one that contains the more moisture, which is cheese. These are the people who say that ants choose their food differently, not just plainly cheese or sugar. Ants are only after three sources of food: Carbohydrates (which can be found in sugars), proteins (found in other insects and meats) and water. This is why ants can be found underneath kitchen sinks. Ants cannot convert protein into energy as they lack the complex liver system that mammals have so it is mainly gathered for creating other ants.
