Lobsters live in the sea and possess hard shells. Female lobsters are called hens or chickens and male lobsters are called cocks. Newborn lobsters, referred to as baby lobsters by many, are called the 'bug' by lobstermen.

It takes around 11 to 12 months for lobster eggs to hatch; female lobsters are known to carry up to 20,000 eggs till the time they hatch. However, not all the eggs hatch into baby lobsters. The mating season is autumn, and the female lobsters carry the developing eggs under their tails until spring, which is the time the eggs hatch into free swimming larvae. For the next 3-4 weeks, these larvae swim towards the light, and feel the water currents and undergo slight transformations in size and shape. They then settle to the seabed and feed themselves, by staying under rocks and crevices.

A bug or baby lobster requires approximately 5-7 years for achieving a full-grown size.
