The ideal weight of a dog needs would depend on a number of factors especially on his breed, size, bone structure and activity levels. Hence it is best to consult your local vet to determine how much your dog should weigh.

In general females tend to be 10 per cent lighter than males. It is also important to note that so called "ideal" weights have been established for a chosen group of purebreds only. You will find that most breed standards have no optimal weight specifications.

For example in very small breeds you have the Chihuahua with an ideal weight of 4 pounds while among the small breeds the Cocker Spaniel has an ideal weight of 25 pounds. On the other hand, in the very large breeds a St Bernard has an ideal weight of as much as165 pounds.

A good rule of thumb is that if a dog is a healthy weight, you should just be able to feel its ribs if you pass your hands along its sides with a little pressure. If you cannot feel them at all - it has too much fat. If the ribs are obvious with hardly any pressure then it is underweight. However - bear in mind the thickness of the coat on some breeds, and also that sight hounds do tend to be "slim", though they will have plenty of muscle on their haunches.

Depending on the breed and general size of the individual animal it could weigh anywhere from only 2 pounds to more than 200.
