My dog just did this a couple day ago.  She was fine afterward just kept running around like normal.  Last night and she stopped walking on the burned paw and the constant licking started.  It looks like the coals burned all the hair off between her toes and the skin is really white.

So far she does not have signs of infection.  I washed the paw with witch hazel and put a bunch of neosporin on it.  Then I wrapped it with some bandage and taped a sock on over that.  Time will tell if she needs antibiotics.

Anything you put on it he'll probably lick off. If it's bad you should get him to a vet. If not it'll heal.
