The most common sign of mites is hair loss because the mites live in or around the hair follicle.  The amount of hair loss can vary greatly from a few small patchy areas to large amounts of total hair loss.  Also there is usually flaking of the skin and depending upon the duration and severity there can be a thickening of the skin.  If the dog has been itching redness is present and if a secondary infection is present you will see red, raised, infected, ulcerated areas.
There are several types of mites that dogs can get.  If you are concerned that your dog has mites have him examined by a veterinarian for diagnosis.  Different mites require different treatment.  Also many skin diseases can look like mites.
