My dog does this and it's related to allergies. His skin gets moist from the licking and then he is itching at it and scooting. He is a cocker and has environmental allergies. It's not a habit, it's an irritation. My dog has to go on prednizone periodically to clear it up. It's like a bacterial infection on the skin. Get it treated because if they go too long your dog keeps you up all night like mine is now....

Has your dog been wormed. They do this when they need worming.

yes he has been wormed. It is disgusting. I just don't know what else to do. I don't know what else it could be.

I am sorry your dog does this and I can see how it is distressing for you. Unfortunately 'he dogs' tend to come with these kind of habits. The only thing I can suggest is to tell the dog off everytime he does this, you only need to say "NO" and move his head away from his bum at the same time and very soon he will respond to just the "NO" because he will know what you mean. It could take some time to get him to respond or he might respond quite quickly, you just have to be on top of the situation all the time. He will still lick himself when you are out of sight but he will soon learn when he can and cannot do this licking. At the end of the day a dog wants to please and he will comply. Good luck and don't give up on him, it is just a habit that needs to be broken.
