My cat's pads are changing color. What is causing this?

A change in the color of a cat's paw is usually caused by a fever - so, if the color has changed rapidly within the last couple of days, then you will have to take your cat to the vet.

The vet will then able to undertake a detailed evaluation of your cat's paws and can hopefully diagnose the problem as soon as possible. After this, treatment can begin straight away.

Although fevers are the most common cause of this symptom, there are also a couple of other problems which can have the same effect:

  • Trauma, or injury, can cause your cat's pads to change color. If this is the case, the pad should usually return to its natural color within a couple of days.
  • Reactions to certain substances may also cause this problem. For example, your cat may have trodden in some unpleasant chemicals.
  • Sometimes there is no worrying reason why a cat would lose pigment from its pads - as this color change can simply be caused by old age.

Sometimes the color on a cat's paws change color because they're dirty, or it could just be the changing seasons.
