The rhino is found in countries as disparate as India, Sumatra, Borneo, Nepal, Vietnam and Africa. But unfortunately it is endangered or on the verge of extinction in most of these countries. The horn of the rhino is a highly valued product in many countries. It is alleged that powdered rhino horn is a sure fire cure for impotency.

Governments all over the world have taken measures to curb the incessant poaching of rhinos but it hasn't worked. The rhinos found on the islands of Java and Sumatra is the most endangered. The numbers that remain in the world border on double-digits. In India, the rhino was on the verge of extinction three decades ago but the numbers improved when the Government opened a sanctuary exclusively for the preservation of rhinos in Kaziranga, Assam. The civil war that has torn apart many African countries has also claimed the rhino. Rhinos are hunted because they are a good source of meat.
