I have not heard of the use of staples for a cat to be fixed. In most cases, they use a stitch that dissolves in about 10 days or so. There might be some discharge for a day or so, and it's natural for the cat to keep it clean for themselves.
If there appears to be some swelling, and the cat is licking excessively, then I would take it to the vet and have it checked out. You can use a clean damp washing cloth and wipe the area very gently to clean it, but you shouldn't have to.
If you aren't happy with the care you get from the vet, exercise your right to take the cat to another vet. Hope this helps you.
